A Guide To Luxury Hotels In Mallorca

Ah, with Christmas and the New Year over, and now the recent flurry of snow has turned to grey sludge it is time to start thinking about finer skies and distant shores. There is nothing better than booking a holiday to blot out the grey days of British winter time and with that in mind I have been checking out luxury hotels in Mallorca. They say that the island has something for every taste, so I have endeavoured to find the perfect location for nightlife loving party people, families that want a bit of fun, and those that just want to catch some rays without four-year-olds or foam parties.

Mallorca lies off the coast of Spain and is part of the Balearic Islands along with sister islands, Menorca and Ibiza. Positioned in the Mediterranean Sea it offers excellent weather during the summer and cooler wetter winters. There are even some places that get a bit of snow in the winter months. Peak summer temperatures are in the region of 28 degrees Celsius, which is comfortably warm, and one of the reasons that the island attracts so many British tourists. In winter months temperatures drop on average to 10 degrees Celsius and tourism is essentially missing. There are a wide range of cultures on the island, and this is reflected in the diverse cuisine available although olives are a staple of the Mallorca diet.

Palma
Palma is the capital of the island and is known for a rich and varied heritage, stunning buildings and a vibrant night life. A stay in Palma would suit people that want more than to just lie on a beach, and want to see museums, galleries and interesting architecture. The city has many wonderful restaurants and lively bars, but this is not the place to go if you are after an Ibiza-style blow out. Instead there are lively festivals, a major part of the Spanish calendar and plenty of arts events. Palma has a diverse range of luxury hotels in Mallorca ranging from a 16th century mansion that overlooks a cathedral to a minimalist inspired hotel with an art gallery and spa.

Magaluf
This resort is twinned with Palma Nova and both have a reputation for being extremely lively. There has over the years been a huge influx of British tourists, and the resort is often described as Blackpool with sun. If you are looking for a quiet break, or to discover some Mediterranean culture, this is not the place to come, in the summertime anyway. During winter months there is a more demure contingent of tourists that come to take advantage of cheap winter sun on extended holidays. A holiday in Magaluf promises foam party fun, crazy days on the beach and plenty of English themed pubs during the summer. The hotels are more geared toward package holiday deals, and luxury hotels are rather thin on the ground. The emphasis here is fitting in as much fun as possible, not on luxury.

Alcudia
This resort lies in the north of the island and offers a quieter option than either Palma or Magaluf and is wonderfully suited to family holidays or a place where a bit of peace and sophistication is what you are after. There are good beaches, fine restaurants and plenty of delightful squares to have a quiet drink. Alcudia is an old town and has plenty of ruins from Medieval and Roman times. There is even a renowned nature reserve nearby that is famed for spectacular bird spotting. Shallow seas make it safe for those with young children and as far as luxury hotels in Mallorca go, it offers sophistication and subtle style.
