Los Angeles is one of the most diverse cities in the world. Located centrally between a mountain range and the ocean, the city is home to millions of people and dozens of unique neighborhoods. Unlike other cities of comparable size, LA is not small or walking distance to all of the sights and attractions. Hotels are spread throughout Los Angeles but often cluster in individual neighborhoods. The areas with highest number of hotels are Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. There are advantages and disadvantages to picking a hotel in each of these neighborhoods.

Downtown Los Angeles in recent years has seen a major revival. Home to the Staples Center, Financial District and LA Convention Center, downtown is segregated from other areas of the city. There are many choices of hotel accommodations in this area of Los Angeles. Most of the hotels are on safe clean streets and walking distance to the above mentioned attractions in addition to Disney Concert Hall, City Hall, Olvera Street, Union Station, Broadway historic theatre district and the Jewelry district. The 101 (Hollywood) freeway originates near downtown and provides visitors with easy access (if light traffic ten minutes) to Hollywood. Other areas of the city are up to 20 minutes to an hour from downtown. Many of the visitors of downtown hotels are often in LA for business or to attend one of the many tradeshows downtown. In 2010 the five star Ritz Carlton, an all glass high rise will be opening in downtown LA.

Hollywood is a perfect hotel option for those looking to strictly sight see and who are arriving with families and or children. This area of Hollywood does not have any five star luxury hotel properties but there are many smaller clean boutique hotels. The most popular hotels with tourists are those on Hollywood Blvd, Highland and Franklin Avenues near the Hollywood and Highland center. The hotels in section of Hollywood area all less than a 5 minute walk to the Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theatre tour bus departure points in the Hollywood and Highland Center. West Hollywood and Beverly Hills are only 10 and 20 minutes away respectively. The beaches can be up to an hour drive during peak travel times from any hotel in Hollywood.

West Hollywood is located between Hollywood and Beverly Hills and has the highest concentration of hotels out of anywhere in Los Angeles. The famed Sunset Strip that is home to world famous night and comedy clubs, neon billboards and a constant flow of traffic that feature some of the highest price cars in the world has several hotels that line its sidewalks. Sunset Strip in West Hollywood extends along the edge of a hill. The hotels perched on the side of Sunset offer guests amazing views of Los Angeles, Downtown and the ocean in addition to the hustle and bustle of the Sunset Strip below. The area that lies between Sunset Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd is largely residential but is home to several hotel properties. Hotels in this area are convenient to both the Sunset Strip and the LGBT area of Santa Monica Blvd. The area south of Santa Monica Blvd also hosts several hotels and is home to some of LA's biggest shopping areas including Robertson Blvd and the Beverly Center. This area is home to many smaller boutique hotels as well.

Beverly Hills with its pristine streets, power shopping and celebrity mansions is a good location for a hotel stay when visiting Los Angeles. Near West Hollywood and Hollywood and 20 minutes or less from the beaches, the City of Beverly Hills hosts a variety of hotels from brand name luxury properties to smaller boutiques. Most of the hotels in Beverly Hills can be found along or off Santa Monica and Wilshire Blvds. Located on Sunset Blvd, the Beverly Hills Hotels is the only hotel in Beverly Hills that is not near other properties or shopping centers. The hotels along Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd include the Beverly Hilton, Beverly Wilshire and Luxe-Beverly Hills.

For those looking to be on the Pacific and still enjoy the fun of Los Angeles, the Santa Monica and Venice areas offer a broad choice of hotel accommodations that are right on the water and close to all the sights. Ocean Ave in Santa Monica runs along the edge of a cliff with beautiful views of the ocean and is lined with thousands of palm trees. Multiple hotels rise above Ocean Ave and offer guests unobstructed views of the Ocean and Mountains. The third street promenade and Santa Monica Pier are just a few minutes walk from any of these hotels. At the intersection of Ocean Ave and Pico Blvd there are a large number of luxury resorts. Casa Del Mar, Sutters and Lowes all sit right on the beach while the Vice Roy further back on Ocean Ave affords guests spectacular views of the ocean. In Venice the Erwin Hotel is located right on Ocean Front Walk where visitors booking a room at this beach front property will never have to leave their room to observe all the excitement on Ocean Front Walk below.

Most people making a visit to LA would ideally like to see all the city has to offer. Finding a hotel in the neighborhood of Los Angeles that most interests the visitor is a good start to having a fun and engaging trip to Los Angeles.
