Rome, Discovering The Spirit Of Itay
There are many historical wonders from the ancient world. Visit the Roman Colosseum, where Gladiators once battled for the glory of all Rome to see, or the Panthelon, or Circus Maximus. While the Colosseum boosted a seating of 50,000 spectators, Circus Maximus is one of the largest sports arenas ever made, and boasts a seating capacity of over seven hundred thousand! The Roman Forum is a site to behold, a hub of political activity in its time.
If a more religious experience is for you there are many attractions for you to enjoy. You can explore the Catacombs of St Callixtus and see the burial site of many martyrs of Christendom. The Cemetery of the Capuchin Monks is a must see, the bones of over four thousand friars decorate the walls ceiling and even chandeliers of these four chapels! It may be a little creepy, but it s definitely worth a look.
More traditionally, there are many parts of the Vatican that are open to the public. This small independent state is only a little over 108 acres and has a bustling population of almost 800! There are many things to visit just within its borders; the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and the Belvedere Park are just some of some of these wonders.
The really nice parts about all of these attractions are that they are minimally priced, and many times free. A unique alternative to going out for some quick food, and good plan would be to try one of Rome's privately owned bistros, where the chef owns the place, and loves to interact with his customers. Talking with the local residents whenever you can, nicely and politely will sometimes reveal hidden sights not often visited by the tourist crowd.
Another way to really get a feel of the city, and possibly saving some money, would be to book a holiday apartment rather than a hotel. They are often reasonably priced compared to an average hotel stay, but you will have more privacy and eat your own meals if you want. Isn't being part of the spirit of Italy going out and taking in things like shopping at local markets, tasting real locally grown foods and mingling with the regulars?
There are other options available as well. You can find a wealth of information on the internet, including guided package tours that include all the accommodations, food, sights and sounds for one price. While these can be informative, some tours are not always what they appear to be so making sure you always read the fine print before committing to anything.
