Where To Find The Best Food In Rome
If you rent a holiday apartment for your visit to Rome, you may want to do some of your own cooking as well. In the market square of Campo de' Fiori, you can get seasonal fruits and vegetables at the market stalls. Not only is the food a feast for your belly, the sight of all this beautiful produce is a feast for your eyes. You can also pick up baked goods around the market fresh from the oven. If you just can't wait until you get back to your abode, stop at one of the many food shops and grab a bite.
Wine cellars often arrange wine tasting courses if you want to learn more about the local vintages. Coffee shops are also a great inexpensive choice for a quick snack or light meal. There are many inexpensive food shops where you can eat some local cuisine and not bruise your budget. They may serve a specialty, like a selection of cheeses, or they may have a simple menu of traditional foods like roast chicken and potatoes or oven roasted lamb. Go early as these shops frequently run out of food quickly. Check for hours that they are open and make a reservation if they take them.
For a moderate price you can find many local spots serving delicious platters of pasta with scallops and salmon caviar, rack of lamb and tagliatelle with tomatoes, oregano and mushrooms. Most of these places have a nice rustic d'cor and the food is absolutely fantastic. Many have nice romantic corners or terraces for those special dinners.
If you want to try the touristy spots, try looking around some of the bigger tourist attractions like the Trevi Fountain. Traditional dishes may include pasta with sardines and pecorino cheese or salt cod and potato croquettes. If you want to try some of the fine dining restaurants, be prepared to plan in advance. Lunch may be a better option if you're on a budget. Delicious fare like polpo grigliato al salmoriglio con broccoli (curly fried baby octopus with zucchini strings) or rigatonicini con ragout di cernia e ricotta salata (rigatonicini with a grouper ragout accompanied by salted ricotta cheese) will give you a more gourmet taste of authentic Rome.
Whichever way you choose to eat your way through Rome, you won't be disappointed. The freshness of the local food cannot be beat. The simple flavors are never overwhelming. Go with an open mind and an empty stomach and feast yourself in Rome.
