The Fine Art Of Choosing A Hotel By Location
The problem with doing this is that these brochures or searches will prioritise the hotels as far as their proximity to the city, or other local attraction such as a beach, is concerned. These leaves you with a problem, because what you are not seeing are the number of hotels that are just a little way away from the beach, or just outside the city centre itself. These hotels will have a significant reduction on cost, offering prices which are much reduced as a direct result of being just that little bit further from where you want to visit.
The saving you'll make from having your hotel a little further out will almost certainly be far more than any cost you'll incur from using local transport. Although to be honest, if you're hotel is just a little way out from the city centre, or a little further from the beach, the walk will be quite pleasant and will even give you a chance to see a little more of the local environment, and often results in spotting things you'd have completely missed otherwise, such as a quaint local restaurant, a hidden park or other local attraction.
The other advantage of looking at these hotels which are slightly further out is that they are less likely to be as busy, and you're more likely to be able to book a room of your choice. It is even possible that the hotel itself will be situated in a more quiet neighbourhood. City centre hotels may well be very close to bustling bars and clubs which, particularly during the holiday season, may be very noisy until very late at night, or even until morning. This could pose a problem unless your hotel is very well insulated against noise by having double glazing. If it doesn't and you want to have the window open to let some fresh air in during the hot summer months, any ambient noise outside could pose a problem. A hotel in a less busy area won't have the same issue, so by saving money you'll actually benefit from this lower level of noise.
Naturally, there are many people who won't be bothered by this and would prefer to be at the very heart of all that hustle and bustle, which is fine, but if you're not one of those people, as many of us aren't, then looking further afield may take a little more time, but provide us with a much more appropriate location.
Looking at local maps, either available from travel agents, touristy information centres or online will give you a good idea of which areas to look for a hotel in, and then carrying out online research or research through tourist centres or agents will give you a good opportunity to start comparing the hotels in the area you wish to stay.
