Budget Friendly Easter Egg Hunt
Even in tough economic times people want to celebrate and have fun with their families for the holidays. In fact, we need such simple diversions even more in tough times. It's Spring and Easter will soon be here, so it's time to get organized and ready for the holiday. Although adults may be prepared to make sacrifices in difficult economic times, kids don't usually grasp the concept, so it's up to us as grown-ups to provide them with memorable and fun activities without breaking the bank.
The Easter Basket Treasure Hunt is a practical holiday entertainment idea that is sure to be fun, as well as challenging. It's simple to create your own version, and the kids will get plenty of eggercise. It is a combination of the classic treasure hunt and the traditional Easter egg hunt.
The Easter Basket Treasure Hunt
The participating children will collect plastic eggs and paper carrots which each hold a clue to the prize, an Easter Treasure Basket! The kids will put their clues together to find the prize. You can give them a time limit to collect the clues, give them a set number of clues to find, or let them find all the clues. The first step in setting this up is to create a terrific Easter Treasure Basket that will fit within your budget.
The Easter Treasure Basket
It can be a lot more affordable to create one basket than a separate basket for each child, so long as the contents are easy to share. The use of reusable plastic eggs and paper carrots is also economical. The grand prize treasure basket for your Easter hunt should be filled will lots of goodies such as candy, chocolate eggs, plush bunnies, stuffed baby chicks or ducks, and anything else that you deem appropriate. If you are concerned about your children's intake of candy and sugar, just use more Easter toys or plush animals.
Plush toys and figurines will also last longer. Place one small plush animal or figurine for each child in the basket and surround them with candy, chocolate, and jellybeans. If you want to add some stickers, crayons, marshmallow Peeps, or other items, then by all means do.
You could choose to make it very competitive by awarding the basket to the winner, but a fairer solution would be to let the kids divide the contents of the basket once it is found. If you supply some smaller size plush toys (one per child) and have equal amounts of individually wrapped candy, then it should be simple to let the children divide up the jellybeans and other goodies.
Creating the Clues
Safety is your most important concern when organizing activities for children. Make sure to explain that the clues will be hidden at low levels so that they don't try climbing on top of a refrigerator or something. This has the added benefit of allowing you to hide the grand prize basket in a cabinet or closet and cover with a cloth without risking the kids finding it while searching for clues. Once they have enough clues, they should have to guess the location of the basket rather than hunt for it.
The type of clues depends on the age of the children. If they can read, they you should use words for the clues, which will also contribute to their vocabulary and reading skills. If they are not old enough to read, then try drawing simple pictures. If you have hidden the basket in a closet, you could try drawing some clothes or a hat. Just use your imagination when designing the clues.
You can either use hollow plastic eggs or paper carrots for your clues. You could even combine these ideas by placing the paper carrots inside the plastic eggs. The eggs can be saved and used again next year. The easiest way to make paper carrots is to cut some orange construction paper into carrot shapes for the taproot, then cut some green construction paper for the leaves.
Cut long slits in the "leaves," tape them to the orange base, and you have an "eggscellent" carrot! All you have to do now is write the clues on the carrot and you're all set.
The Hunt for the Prize!
Make sure to hide the eggs/carrots in locations that are easy to reach, such as in corners, under the sofa, behind a desk, under a throw rug, behind a lamp, and so forth. The importance of safety was mentioned earlier, but you should remember to explain to the kids the height above which the clues will not be hidden.
Once the kids have found all or enough of the clues, or the time limit is up, have them pool the clues that they have gathered and take guesses at the location of the basket. You may have to help them with this, or provide a few more hints. After the location is guessed, the kids can each have a share of the contents!
Even though it is simple, this fun activity is sure to be a great success. You won't even have to put all of your eggs in one basket! It should also be easy on the budget. Hoppy hunting and happy Easter!
